Hello!
It’s another one of my favorite piano concerto that I would talk about. It is
composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. It is called Piano Concerto no. 2 in C minor,
Op. 18. Rachmaninoff was depressed for a long time, and this concerto was a
result from his recovery. This concerto was dedicated to Nikolai Dahl, his physician,
who restored his confidence. Every time I listen to this concerto, I feel like
experiencing and relate from what he went through. All of the movements were
really heartbreaking. I feel like the first movement is where his hopes are
crushed. The second movement is where everything is going away from, and at the
last part of the second movement is where he almost gave up. I think the last
movement is where he found hope and recovered because of the triumphant climax.
If you like purely poignant music, I would suggest Chopin's Nocturne in C Sharp (#20) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5qeuVOIbHk&index=6&list=PLXWx_20pBk_ERBBTbXzEaDdrJ6xPDiQIq I am listening to the entirety of the Rachmaninoff piece right now. The first movement certainly does feel like a person wandering and lost, like he couldn't settle on any one theme. I also read about Dahl and how he helped Rachmaninoff. It's sad that the whole funk he went through stemmed from a poor conductor, not a poor 1st symphony, but had he not gone through it we wouldn't have Eric Carmen's ripoff of the 2nd movement, "All By Myself". Not that he's the first one to do it, but Eric's plagiarism was pretty egregious.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your suggestion! I listened to Chopin's nocturnes non-stop when I was at high school especially this. Listened to this again multiple times after your suggestion.
